Oh man, eventful weekend!

After my last post, Fran's friends started pouring in from Winnipeg and Ottawa and other parts of Montréal for Osheaga. First was Ollie, a Francophone guy Fran went to P.E.I. And China with, who lives in Northern MTL.. He was in our neighborhood for Juste Pour Rire, which is a comedy festival held annually in the center city. We walked around the festival with him for a while, which, between a guy catching potatoes on a fork strapped to his genitals and a lost hospital patient with a Sapphire gin IV roaming aimlessly through the crowd, was endlessly entertaining. Afterwards we (me, Michael, Ellen, Fran, and Ollie) went to Mile End to Ollie's friends' improv show. It was all in French, which was AWESOME, and also the bar at which it was held had $7 Boréale pitchers. Which is unheard-of in Montréal. Magic. From there we went by the house, picked up Fran's friend John (student at University of Ottawa, originally from Iowa), and headed to Ollie's house with a bunch of other people. Ollie and Fran and John and Emile and un Parisien whose name I've forgotten started jamming. Fran and Ollie on piano, Paris on guitar, Emile on vocals, and John on..wooden box. It was the most amazing thing I had witnessed, like some sort of French Tom Waits meets Jamie T meets fresh original spoken word. I wish I could post the videos! It was so cool. Had lots of conversations en Français all night, overall a great success.

Saturday Fran bought me a ticket to Osheaga because he's absurdly generous, ALL the freaking time. So we spent the day at Jean-Drapeau, where Piknik was last year. We saw Tokyo Police Club, The Mountain Goats, Jacques Greene, Death from Above 1979, Robot Koch, Girl Unit, and Bassnectar. Highlights were Robot Koch and Girl Unit... Unfortunately Bassnectar was meh. Sound check was super rushed, so it sounded pretty shitty. Also it was packed, and he was only given an hour to play. The last three or so tracks were way sick, but otherwise it was just okay. The whole day was freakin' awesome though, I highly recommend you check out Girl Unit. Lame name, sweet tracks.

Today I saw Li briefly, and spent the day walking around Mile End by myself, taking more photos of street art and snagging a bagel from Fairmount. Met up with Fran, went to Kyle's, got a sweet Québécois hairscut, aaaand now I'm here.

Friday I'm taking a bus to NYC, hanging out with Max Sale hopefully, and then leaving from Jersey on Monday. Saturday and Sunday trains were sold out, so I have to head out a few days early. Boo.

Anyway. Back to la vie montrealaise. :)

Bangs.

After that last post on Wednesday, Will made his famous Mexi-Burgers for us and Michael and Ellen and Andrew and Fran and Rosalie. Bacon was on sale, so we bought it all. Also cheese. Lots...of cheese. We made sangria and chilled outside until it was time to head to Bassdrive. I hadn't realized it had moved to a place call Belmont on St-Laurent and Mont Royal, just a few blocks from where I lived last year, which is pretty rad except that when we ran into Alix a few days ago, I told her to come to Koï. My bad... Anyway, upon arriving at Belmont, I came to the realization that dubstep in Montréal had finally reached the point at which Sub.mission's been sitting for nearly two years. Over-crowded venue, mostly with bros and drunk high schoolers... We're predicting that DnB will make an ardent comeback here shortly. We'll see. Anyway, despite the change in the Bassdrive scene, it was great seeing Jenny spin again. Kyle played the most refreshing set I've seen in years. Down-tempo, jazzy at times, with smooth hip hop vocals, and heeeeeeavy on the bass. Mr. Yipes killed it! Knight Riderz came on after, but we headed home around then.

Yesterday morning, Fran and I went to Gare Centrale to see Will off before his day-long train ride home. He came pretty close to missing his train due to a completely nonsensical queue arrangement courtesy of Amtrak. Buuuuut he made it, and arrived in Philadelphia 14 hours later. What a long ride, holy crap. Once Will left, Fran and I walked back to the house, then sat at Parc LaFontaine for a while. We went to La Banquise (Fran had never been before omgwtfbbq?!???!!!?) for lunch, then met up with Mike and Ellen back at LaFontaine. We did some emailing ("everybody's EMAILING" -Jeff Goldlblum) aaaaaaand then went home, where Fran gave me an introductory tutorial on Traktor, and how to use an APC-20 instead of the keyboard. I fell asleep early.

And now I'm here!

My head is completely consumed with the millions of things I have to accomplish between August 8th and September 1st that I'm having a hard time relaxing while I'm still here in Montréal. I'm having fun still of course, but I'm hopelessly anxious. I can't sit still.

A side note: I am so lucky to be have such loving and supportive people in my life. I can't imagine where I'd be without you.

Conspiracy and espionage!

No luck on the photo uploading front... I'll post em all when I get back to the states and I can post them directly from my phone.

I spent most of yesterday drawing because a thunderstorm had moved in, rendering outdoor activity unpleasant without heavy rain gear. Once Will got back from Tony's, we decided to walk up to Parc LaFontaine (after the storm, of course) and enjoy the cool weather before checking out a dubstep night at Sapphir. Turns out there was this amazing Brazilian rock band playing a concert in the little amphitheater by the fountain, so we sat and jammed until the end of the show. They even played an encore! From there, we started walking back to Sapphir, and on the way, we saw some weird dancing silhouettes projected on the wall of a building. Some really enthusiastic girls informed us that it was a Sapporo promotional thing where two people stand in front of an XBox Kinect, and it projects an image of a geisha and a sumo wrestler that'll correspond to your movements. Then they film you and upload it onto your Facebook and make you "like" the Sapporo page. So naturally we jumped at the opportunity, and now there's a really great video on Will's wall of us flailing about like idiots! Theeeeen we walked to a surprisingly empty Sapphir, where we sat in a sweet womb chair from the seventies and drank $2 Bromont bières. The DJ, DJewel, was a girl named Émilie who I had met last year at Korokova after Bassnectar played Piknik. When she finished her set, we went back to the house to meet up with Michael, then returned to Sapphir. We ran into Dave there, and listened to some girls from Nova Scotia recount a really hilarious camping trip, aaaaand then we went home and watched Adventure Time.

You can tell when I get sick of typing on here.

T'as un feu(R)?

The weather in Montreal is absolutely perfect. It's about a tenth as humid as Philly was before we left, and about twenty degrees cooler. If I had to estimate, we've been averaging at about 75 Fahrenheit, but the breeze has made it feel like a steady 70. Sunshine, light rain occasionally. Beautiful.

Anyway, I've got a few days to cover so this might be a long one.

HOKAY. So we woke up just before 5am on Friday to board the MegaBus at 30th St Station bound for New York. There were a bunch of fire trucks parked at the subway station by Will's house, so we booked it to the next station in hopes that we'd catch the next one and not miss our bus.. We made it just in time somehow, and we boarded our double-decker bus. Our driver went on a comical rant about menopause in the middle of the safety instructions before our departure for NYC, and two hours later, we had arrived. The bus dropped us off at 7th & 28th, and from there we walked to Penn Station to meet our Rideshare. We found the red GMC Savannah parked on 31st, and we were greeted by a friendly Ukrainian guy named Stav. He drove us and a third passenger named Alix aaaaaall the way to Lionel-Groulx station here in MTL. The trip was about six hours long, minus the two gas station stops, the lunch stop, and the half-hour queue at customs.

We only really started chatting once we got to the border, which is a shame because it turns out that Stav and Alix were pretty fascinating. Alix is probably 24. I didn't ask. Her dad is from Longmont and her mom is French. She was born in France, but since her dad was a diplomat, they ended up moving every three years. In addition to French and English, she also speaks Russian and Arabic. She went to McGill, and has spent the past few years working as a consultant in Lebanon. She's headed to Libya in a few weeks to gauge what can be done by peace groups in the next year. Stav lives in Quebec with his wife, they own two school busses and a van, and they want to make Ridesharing their primary source of income. After hearing that Will has just finished studying Music Industry at Drexel, Stav excitedly busted out his iPod to share his music with us (and employ Will to be his band's manager, lolz). His band's called Magical Crimea, and they sound like Gogol Bordello. #winning

So the ride into Canada went really smoothly. From Lionel-Groulx, Alix paid for a taxi to drop Will and I off at Michael's house on St-Urbain, which was incredibly nice of her. We knocked on Michael's door aaaand we got no response. Our phones are out of commission now that we're outside of the US, so we had no way to contact him. I knocked again, and a person I didn't recognize came to the door. It was a new roommate named David, and through jumbled Franglais we established that we were in the right place, but Michael was out somewhere at the time. So we set our bags inside and walked across the street to Second Cup were we sat for about 45 minutes until Michael happened to waltz in. Just by chance! Craaaaaaazy! A couple hours later, Fran arrived by Greyhound, and at that point it started to hit me that I actually made it back here. I've been pretty giddy ever since. I love this city. Anyway, we spent the evening at the park by Sherbrooke, got dinner at Buns, and retired somewhat early.

Saturday we walked to Kyle's new(ish) loft. It's on the top floor above Schwartz's, HUGE, with exposed brick and rooftop access. He's living there with Ashlin and Sabine, so naturally it is decorated beautifully, with all sorts of artwork and things on the walls. We met up with Kyle, and walked to a little lunch spot by La Montagne. We sat on the terrasse and drank coffee and ate sandwiches and caught up. Afterwards, we walked to Parc LaFontaine to meet up with Ellen and Geneviève. I lovelovelove LaFontaine. It's possibly my favorite park here. We spent an embarrassingly long time trying to set up the slack line before we just decided to sit down and enjoy the weather. Before long it was dark, and we were preparing for the Blood On My Nikes party down in Vieux-Port. The party was pretty sweet, highlights were definitely Inspector Dubplate and Sinistarr, also the other crazies in attendance. Didn't see many people from last year there, which was pretty disappointing, but kind of expected after realizing I had been referring to Wally and Wampa interchangeably. Oops.

Sunday afternoon, we walked to the mountain for Tams--a loooooong-awaited journey for me and Will. We'd been talking about it since last year, and it was pretty much everything we could have hoped for. Following Tams came poutine from Belle Pro (C'est NOM) with Fran before his departure for Ottawa. After he left, we went to visit Will's friend Vanessa at the GoGo Lounge. It's a really fantastic cocktail lounge decked out in fruit-shaped lights and mirror balls, pink lights galore, with a DJ spinning the hottest hits from the 60's, 70's, and 80's. Basically I just want to go there with Nate Hout every day for the rest of forever. Après ça, nous sommes allés chez Kyle pour une petit fête sur le toit. Il y était des DJs comme Bus et Wampa, avons dansé beaucoup et avons bu "bière". lolz.

Yesterday we went to Jeanne-Mance aaaaaaand we cooked steak fajita burritos and I cleaned and Will and I watched Enter the Void and now I'm getting sick of typing.

On an irrelevant side note, the Epic Meal Time guys live here. I am determined to find them. SAUCE BOSS.

I'm gonna try to upload des photos. Booyakasha.

These are the breaks!

Sunday evening Will and I rode bikes to South St, where we wandered and got "wooder" ice and phenomenal Thai food from Tamarind. In that order, of course. From there, we rode all the way to a show at a venue called Bookspace in Northern Liberties. Very aptly named, Bookspace is a huge warehouse filled with shelves upon shelves upon shelves of books. Also art. And...a Volvo. It's a very hip place I could imagine doing really well in Denver, somewhere on Cap Hill. Among the bands was one called Your Sister's Canary. They're really good, look 'em up. Some girl dressed like Peter Pan spun fire poi outside, which was bizarre for an indie show.. And everyone was really into it! I can't see it having the same effect in Denver. People would say, "Go the hell back to Cervantes where you belong." I came home to a break-up text (lolz), stayed up watching YouTube videos with Will, and crashed around 3:30.

Monday we took a train to Elizabethtown (rural PA!) to get his passport from his parents' house and hang out in his hometown for a day. His parents are awesome, very fun and artsy, and they're both ridiculously talented cooks. That night we went to a beer garden terrasse thing at a place called Bube's (endless lolz). Surprisingly, not a strip club. We hung out with his friend Eric there and discussed travel and music. Then we went to The Watering Trough, where we met up with his friends Brad and Wyatt, and I commandeered the juke box and put on bitchin' choons such as "Another Night" by The Real McCoy and "Moondance" by Van Morrisson.

The next day we hiked up Mt. Gretna to the firetower, atop which we sat for about an hour and a half. I thought an hour and a half of sun-exposure would put a bit of color on my legs, but of COURSE my shoulders are bright red and my legs are just as white as they've always been. I think I have a condition. UV-resistant legs. That night his parents made the most amazing supper of scallops with a cucumber salad and a bean salad. Afterwards we had watermelon of the yellow variety (whaaaaaaat?!) and hopped on a train bound for Philly.

I did a bit of drawing today while Will worked on another song, then we got some enormous cheesesteaks (deliciouuusssss) and prepared for Canadatrip. Early Friday we're taking a bus to NYC, and from there we are catching a ride to MTL, finally.

The purpose of this trip has changed a bit over the past few days, and I think now is the time to do what I have wanted to do since high school.

Yessir, yessir. Change is gonna come.

A-hue, a-hue, a-hue

Friday evening, Will's neighbor, Scott came over with his friend, Jay. Scott is an older guy, about my height, whose quirks and spaciness imply that he has probably been to Burning Man more times than he could remember. He talks about when he traveled the world with different early electronic musicians and how we'd be able to hear the intricacies in older electronic music if we'd just turn it up "two more clicks." Also Scott and his wife went to Brazil with Alex and Allyson Gray last year. They're good friends and visit each other often.

Jay is a taller guy with monster dreads and kind eyes. He didn't talk much, but with a thick accent he told us he's a Falkland Islander and a quantum physicist. He gives lectures all around the world and has been working on a book, due to be released...sometime. I learned that the national language of the Falklands is a dialect of Portuguese and they have a vast abundance of penguins! I want to go!

Once they left, Will, his friend Tim, and I went to a West Philly hipster party, which was everything you'd expect... flannel, minors, cheap beer, inane arguments, full-sleeves, Ray Bans, and sadness. Disappointing, in accordance with its stereotype. Needless to say we went home on the earlier side...

Yesterday we went to a block party! I hadn't been to one before, but it was everything I'd hoped it would be. There were a lot of people and a lot of dogs, people dancing through a sprinkler in the middle of the road, free food and beer. There were a few DJs spinning funk and old school hip hop, and later these hip-looking crust punk kids (if you can imagine) played a most wonderful gypsy folk set. Lots of positive vibes all around. Can we do this in Denver sometime plz?

After the block party, Will grilled up some burgers back at the house. Adria and Sam hung out for a bit, then Will's friend June came over to eat with us. She's the first transgender person I'd ever hung out with, and as nervous as I was about being uncontrollably awkward around her, it was all the more pleasant to find that it didn't make me uncomfortable at all. Soooo for some reason we watched Saturday Night Live, featuring Lady Gaga. I've recently taken kind of a liking to Lady Gaga (Judas mainly, thanks to Paul), and I'd been trying to stand up for her the night before to Will and Tim, but she didn't help our case very much when she ended up putting on a spiked collar and a pregnant belly and putting her feet in stirrups and proceeding to have gold fluid spew everywhere... That's harder for me to defend.

Today will consist of laundry, tomorrow we're hanging out in Lancaster, and then it's off to Canaderp.

ADD

Yesterday was awesome.

The weather was beautiful*, a lot cooler* (a much welcomed break in the pattern of hot-as-shit days), so Will suggested we bike to the food trucks. I was a bit nervous because I hadn't been on a bike in a few years, but! Turns out it's really tough to forget how to ride a bike*! WHO KNEW?!

We rode around trying to find this particular truck that sells amazing falafel, and found it parked on the Drexel campus. It'd stopped selling food though, so we walked to the adjacent truck. We got some phenomenal Thai beef tacos*, and the guy gave us free bottles of water*! We sat outside and ate and rode back to the house to prepare for the evening's festivities.

The party was pretty cool, it was in this little dive bar called Medusa. There were rope lights and bubbles* and glow bracelets and a fog machine...and Will threw down, concluding his set with his Supernova Girl remix*! As expected, it was very well received. Yahtzee whomp! The dubstep DJ was alright, played a lot of older choons, but did squeeze in Terravita's Dougie remix*, which made me really happy. We helped them tear down the decorations and they gave us a ride back*.

I'm in a lot of pain today, buuuuut it was worth it.

On an unrelated note, Will and I has a discussion regarding the Mac paperclip, Clippy, and if he existed for Ableton. "Hi, it looks like you're trying to make dubstep. Need a hand?"

The Sauce Boss

We watched a lot of Epic Meal Time yesterday. It's becoming a daily ritual actually, we make an effort to spend at least two episodes with The Sauce Boss every day before cooking for ourselves. Last night I recreated Illegal Pete's for dinner, and the chicken fajita quesadilla was WILDLY successful. Good to know that I could open my own Ill Pete's wherever the hell I please.

Did I mention we watched Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century a few nights ago? It was pertinent to the (hilariously fantastic) remix Will made of Supernova Girl. Well last night we all watched Zenon: The Zequel, but this time there was no logical reason behind us making such a poor decision.

Will is working on his set for the OddCake party tonight, and afterwards we will be snagging lunch from a food truck because he says it's imperative that I experience a food truck while I'm here. I won't argue that.

Until then, I will be snacking on a "Honey Nut Crunch", which as you will see in the photo I'm about to put up, looks like it should be coated in peanut butter and hung from the tree in your front yard by a piece of yarn.

Zedus Lapedus!

Been chilling out, maxin', relaxin' all cool, not shooting much b-ball outside of the school, but rather drawing and watching Will make music. Treal, not Will Smith. Though it is interesting that yesterday's musical project consisted of remixing "Supernova Girl" from Zenon Girl of the 21st Century, and we all know how much Will Smith loves to make songs about movies... INTERPLANETARY MEGA STELLAR HYDROSTATIC, THERE'S NO GRAVITY BETWEEN US--OUR LOVE IS AUTOMATIC! Zoom zoom zoom, make my heart go boom boom.

That's been stuck in my head for...almost 48 hours now.

Anyway I've been marinating some chicken breasts in my best version of the marinade from work since yesterday afternoon, tonight's dinner shall be some Ill Pete's chicken fajita quesadillazzz. I finally get away from Tex-Mex food, and now that's all I want to make. Naturally.

Tomorrow Will's playing an OddCake party, and it's gonna be awesome. Also it's supposed to be a lot cooler (87 degrees! It's like winter!), which is just icing on the cake. The OddCake.

Zoom zoom zoom!

IIIIIIN WEST PHILADELPHIA

Born and raised, on a playground is where I spent most of my days.

I made it! My flight left Denver yesterday at 10:30am and I ended up arriving in Philly at 4:05 (five minutes ahead of schedule). I took a train from the airport to 30th St station, where I met up with Will and headed to to the Wall Cat-- his and Katie's casa, named for an incident where there were...cats...in the walls. His friends came over and we barbequed and relaxed. Talked music. Soaked up the sticky heat. Like G's. One of Will's roommates is out of town, so instead of a couch, I get a bedroom! With a bed! Thanks, Hotels.com. Best deal ever.

Slept in until noon today, played the greatest Playstation game ever, Little Big Planet. Leftover wings for breakfast at two. Then we walked ALL the way to Center City to hand out flyers for Will's show on Thursday. It was the longest walk ever (well two and a half hours ish) on the hottest day ever, but it was bearable firstly because every so often we'd walk into a wind tunnel. Secondly, many businesses can afford to crank the AC with the windows and doors open, as to make the sidewalk a cooler place for pedestrians. Thirdly. Water ice. Or "wooder" ice, if you're from Jersey. It's Italian ice made with real fruit, and it's served out of a truck! Philly rocks! Epic walk time preceded Epic Meal Time at Le Mur de Chat, and now I'm here writing. Huzzah!

We're gonna public transport our way to Montreal this weekend I believe. Until then, I'm going to stalk ?uestlove since he's apparently in the city, all the time. I will find him.

TOMORROW (technically)

Preparatory measures for the trip have been going incredibly smoothly so far, and yet I'm so anxious I want to puke. This is highly unusual for me.

People are setting off mortars in the parking lot.

Packing is about done.

Sky's out and about.

I'm covered in paint.

32 hours until departure.

No sleep in the foreseeable future.

Billy in the a.m.!

Two days!

Two days from now I'll be headed to Philadelphia! From there it's off to Montréal, and from there, it's to wherever sounds like a good idea until I'm homebound from Newark on August 8th.

I intend on posting entries here like I did last time to keep my family and friends enlightened regarding my adventures, mostly so you all know I'm alive. I mean, I'd call you all regularly and everything, but as much as AT&T would like to accept my payment for international roaming, I'm afraid I can't afford that. Also I'm probably going to be really busy. And I'll develop this absurd accent that you won't be able to stand, and you won't want to talk to me anyway. HOWEVER. If you think you can handle the accent, I'll be available via Skype and FaceTime given I've got a decent wi-fi connection. Let me know if you need my info and I'll send it to youuuuu.

Tomorrow will be spent making most of my pre-departure preparations (hittin' the bank, finishing laundry, packing, etc..) and saying my goodbyes to everyone I didn't see today. I'm spending Saturday with Billy, because he returns from Hawaii that morning, and it's the only time I'll get to see him before I leave. ;_;

I would include 'soaking up the dry Denver air' in my to-do list, but it's been quite hot and monsoon-ing like a mofo the past few days, so the humidity is abnormally high. I'm sticky and gross. Our room might be flooding. This'll be good preparation for the journey I bet. Eeep!
