Yesterday afternoon I counted 38 people wearing Iron Maiden shirts. I found out later that they played here last night, which was a relief to hear. For a minute I thought I'd been missing out on a major cultural emblem or something.
Yesterday I met a local chef named Sebastien who produces (what I've gathered to be, as I haven't heard any of it yet) some sort of lo-fi electro glitch or something. We got phở at this place on St-Catherine and walked around FOREVER trying to find Koï, and found it after about 45 minutes. It was about 40 minutes into the show and the music was pretty decent. Not outstanding, but decent enough to have more than eight people in the crowd. But alas...
A good two hours later, the audience augmented by about 92 (ish) and it was really like any show in Denver.
It kind of felt like home, only exponentially less fantastic because I didn't have anyone to Wobblegirl or Chernobyl Child or Yes with me. :( It was fun anyway, it's nice to know there are more than seven other people who think this whole thing whomps. Speaking of which, The Fellowship is officially going international.
Woke up to terrible heat again. It was supposed to rain yesterday, but then it was "pushed" to today. I haven't seen a single cloud. Hopefully tomorrow, this dripping sweat thing is grossing me out.
On the way over here (Cagibi as usual) I found a little boutique of local art and "found" things: slides, photographs, postcards, stickers, comic books, patches... It's absolutely the coolest store I've been into so far. I had to force myself to leave, because I'm very sure I could spend hours in there. I might do that later. Anyway I picked up a bunch of stuff to send you people, so stand by. :)
As of yesterday, I feel really accomplished. It's been hard to speak French here because everyone speaks English, and if they can tell you're not a French-speaker, they'll speak to you in English...even if you try to speak to them in French. It's not that they're trying to be rude or anything, they're just being helpful and trying to be efficient. You know, as opposed to scrambling to communicate effectively when there's a line of people behind you. But yesterday was the first day that they haven't replied in English, and I had several interactions with people entirely in French. Yay!
I just now realized Cagibi is a vegetarian café. I've been getting iced tea and the grilled cheese with pesto and tomatoes every time. I need to try something new soon.
I miss you guys!
