(I'm actually posting this at 10:53am on Saturday, I started writing this last night, but left mid-way to hang out with Taurean et al.)

Today I met another dubstep-lover (thanks again, Craigslist) named Li. We hung out and exchanged music suggestions, then meandered over to Olympia to see his friend's band play. He introduced me to his brother and his cousins and a few of his friends, and they're all really rad. I'm starting to feel a little less alone here. Hooray! Anyway, Olympia is kind of the size of the Fillmore. When we got there it was about at 80% capacity. Apparently the event was a sort of battle of the bands thing and the winners are to fly to Germany to record an album or something. We arrived late and caught the tail end of an all-girl urban drumline. Following them was Li's friend's band, Barton Fink. Here's a videoooo:

Following them was this terrible, girl-fronted pseudo-metal band. One of the guitarists looked like Aaron Holstein (Vibesquad), only SOMEHOW even more of a bro. Flat-brimmed hat, wifebeater, aviators, stupid shorts/socks combo, a .308 bullet belt, sleeves, and really terrible faces and guitar moves. Also he was the band's screamer. I was dying. Oh look, a video:

(Continued Saturday 10 July)

So after the show last night, I went with Li and the gang to some bar on St-Denis and Ontario. It was waaaaay too crowded and I was getting tired so Li and I took the Métro back to Laurier, and from there he bussed it back to his casa.

Taurean was watching operas on DVD with a couple friends when I got home at around 1am. As soon as I walked in the door, he started talking to me in French. He made me introduce myself to them in French, at which point I was really too tired to function, so I imagine I didn't seem like a very pleasant person... He forced a PBR upon me. I thanked him and went and sat in my room. I over-heard them talking in the living room, in English (thanks Taurean, hahaha). I overheard that the guy, Hadley, is here as an escape from New Zealand, and the girl, whose name I don't remember (-2 pts), is here as an exchange student from Finland. Sidenote, I do remember that she's here to study French and she's also fluent in Finnish, English, Swedish, and Russian. And she knows some Spanish (+1 for remembering). I overheard Taurean talking about how he only enjoys music from between the 20's and 50's, and how he's pretty sure everything that's been coming out now is crap. Hadley said there are some decent new musicians now actually. Taurean asked who, and Hadley mentioned Sleigh Bells and Flying Lotus (at which point I grabbed my PBR and ran into the living room to join the conversation) and MF Doom, to name a few. We started talking about electronic music and dubstep and from there we started furiously exchanging music suggestions. I love how much music exchange has been happening since I've arrived. I showed them The Blackout Crew (LOLZ), which turned into YouTube video bonanza. Then he told us about this brand new genre that's becoming a thing called Witch House. Some of the artists under this genre are called >ℑ⊇≥◊≤⊆ℜ, μnłıłĿΞΔ, twYlYZoNe, and †‡†. Apparently Crystal Castles falls under this category too, but from what I listened to of the other artists last night, I would very sternly disagree with that statement. It's like electro-goth with really deep, slowed down rap over it? I don't know, it's really bizarre. Anyway Taurean wouldn't allow us to speak English for about 75% of the evening. Although frustrating, I do think that needs to continue. I'll probably tell him that as soon as he wakes up ("PAS PLUS ANGLAIS!"). Did I mention he's a French teacher? He has a Masters in French Literature (I believe) and he's been spending all his time applying for jobs in language schools around here. Anyway, he gave us the history of Québec in French et je l'ai compris. Yay! We stayed up talking and drinking tea until we started crashing at almost 4am.

I came to a very important realization last night. After meeting Will Thursday night, I had been under the impression (ish) that it was necessary to seek another American if I wanted to be understood by anyone. That's how drastically different it was hanging out with him vs. people I'd met before. Now, between the Québecois (and his friends, who I don't think were all from here), the Finn, and the New Zealander, I've found that assumption to be entirely false. I know I've always talked about knowing that already, but to see it in action is really encouraging.

Maybe I'm just feeling more positive because the weather is perfect right now. Speaking of which, it's definitely a photo day. I owe many photos anyway.

Coming to Montréal may have been the best decision I've ever made. And I haven't even been here a week! Eeeee!

I love you all and miss you lotz. Again, you are ALL welcome to come visit. It's not THAT far away... :P

xoxo
